From behind-the-wheel training to the learner’s permit and road skills test, this guide walks you through exactly what to expect so your teen can move forward with confidence.
Step 1:
Behind-the-Wheel Instruction
After completing classroom instruction, your student will complete 8 hours of behind-the-wheel “Drive time” training with one of our instructors.
This is where students gain real driving experience and build confidence on the road.
What to Bring:
TIP Card or LA Wallet
Arrive on time
Scheduling Guidelines:
24-hour notice required for cancellations. If you need to reschedule, Call (318) 445-3237 or text (318) 201-2514
Missed drives without notice = $40 reschedule fee
Step 2:
Getting Your Learner’s Permit in Louisiana
Once behind-the-wheel instruction “drive times” are complete, we provide a sealed envelope required for the DMV. Do not open this envelope.
What to bring to the DMV:
Student
Sealed envelope
Birth certificate
Parent ID
TIP card
Custodial paperwork (if applicable)
Custodial parent must be present
No additional DMV fee
Step 3:
Practicing with a Learner’s Permit
This is where confidence is built. The more your teen practices, the safer and more capable they become.
Requirements
Must hold permit for 180 days
Must be at least 16
Who they can drive with:
Parent/guardian (21+)
Licensed sibling (18+)
Step 4: Road Skills Test
After 180 days, your student is eligible for their road skills test.
Many families choose Shut Up & Drive for their Road Skills Test because students feel more comfortable testing in a familiar environment.

Test fee: $50
